What the pumpkin stencil tool makes

Type a carving idea, or upload a photo of a pet, a face, or a simple logo, and this page returns a stencil you can print. The sheet is solid black on white. Black is the part you cut out of the pumpkin. White is the skin you leave, including the bridges that hold the design together.

Pick a difficulty and, if you want a starting motif, a preset. Easy is a few large shapes for a first pumpkin. Medium adds a bit more interior detail. Advanced is finer, but the bridges stay thick enough to carve with a kitchen knife. There are no hairline cuts and no floating islands: every white piece connects back to the margin so it does not fall out when you cut.

The page is a portrait sheet sized like A4 or US Letter, with a white margin, so you can print it and tape it to the pumpkin. Download the file from the result. Halloween is why this sits next to the costume tool: one page for the costume, this page for the pumpkin. An uploaded photo is resized in the browser and is not stored.

How to make a carving stencil

  1. Describe the carving, or add a photo

“A black cat on a fence under the moon” is a complete idea. You can also upload a pet, a face, or a bold logo and turn that silhouette into the stencil. A photo is optional. If you choose Custom and you do not upload anything, the idea field has to say what to carve.

  2. Pick a preset and a difficulty

Black cat, skull, haunted house, and bats and moon are ready-made motifs. Custom uses your sentence. Easy keeps the shapes few and the bridges very thick. Medium is the usual pumpkin. Advanced allows more cuts, still with bridges you can actually leave standing.

  3. Generate the sheet

The result should be the stencil itself: black shapes on a white page, not a photo of a carved pumpkin and not a mockup on a table. If you see gray shading or a real pumpkin, generate again. The page is portrait, about 1K, with a margin for the paper.

  4. Download, print, and carve the black

Use Download to save the PNG. Print it on A4 or Letter, portrait, and tape it to the pumpkin. Cut out the black. Leave the white, especially the bridges. A quick test on paper tells you whether a bridge is too thin before you cut the pumpkin.

Stencils people print for Halloween

A cat on a fence

Idea: a black cat on a fence under the moon. Preset: black cat, or Custom with that sentence. Difficulty: medium. You should get a bold cat silhouette, a fence line, and a moon, with white bridges between the cutouts. This is the design the page is built around.

A pet photo

Upload a clear side view of a dog or a cat and leave the preset on Custom. The stencil should keep the ears and the profile, as solid black shapes, not as a gray photograph. Easy difficulty if this is your first pumpkin. The photo is not stored.

A simple skull for a new carver

Preset: skull. Difficulty: easy. The face of the skull is a few large holes, not a medical diagram. Thick white bridges keep the nose and the teeth from falling out. Print it large enough that those bridges stay wide on the pumpkin.

Tips for a stencil you can actually carve

  • Black means cut. White means leave the pumpkin, including every bridge.
  • If a white piece is trapped inside black with no path to the edge, it will fall out. Generate again.
  • One subject is enough. A cat, a moon, and a fence is a design. A whole street scene is not.
  • Print in portrait at a size that fits the face of your pumpkin, and cut the black only.
  • A photo is for the silhouette. A busy snapshot with three pets will not become three clean stencils.
  • When you want a costume picture of the same night, use the Halloween costume tool. It is a different page.

Pumpkin stencil questions

What does the black mean?

Black is what you cut out. White is the pumpkin skin you leave. The white connections are bridges. They have to stay thick, or the design falls apart while you carve.

Can I upload a pet, a face, or a logo?

Yes. The photo is optional. A clear profile or a simple logo becomes a silhouette. The sheet is still black on white, not a copy of the photograph. The upload is not stored.

Which difficulty should I pick?

Easy for a first pumpkin or a young carver: few shapes, very thick bridges. Medium for a typical design. Advanced for more detail, with bridges that are still wide enough for a kitchen knife.

Will it print on A4 and Letter?

The sheet is a portrait page with a white margin, meant for A4 or US Letter. Download the PNG and print it at a size that fits your pumpkin. It is about 1K, so keep the shapes bold rather than tiny.

What is a floating island?

A piece of white completely surrounded by black. When you cut the black, that piece has nothing holding it and falls into the pumpkin. The stencil is asked to connect every white region to the margin with a thick bridge.

Is an uploaded photo stored?

No. The browser resizes it and sends it only to draw this stencil. This site does not keep the file. A text-only idea never uploads a photo at all.

How is this related to the costume tool?

Both are Halloween tools. The costume page puts a person in a costume. This page makes the carving pattern for the pumpkin. They do not share a photo. Open the costume tool from the related links if you want that picture too.
