Photo Restoration

Upload a worn photo. Leave colorize off to keep the original tones, or turn it on for a restrained color pass. The file is not stored.

JPG, PNG, or WebP. Faces and fine detail survive better when the scan is not tiny.

The photo is resized in this browser and sent only to make the repair. It is not stored on this site.

Upload an old or damaged photo, then compare the repair.

What photo restoration repairs

Upload an old or damaged photo and this page tries to lift scratches, dust, stains, creases, fade, and blur while keeping the same people and the same framing. A colorize switch adds restrained color. Leave it off and a black-and-white photo stays black and white.

The comparison slider is the point of the page. Drag it to see the upload on one side and the repair on the other. That is how you tell whether a face was clarified or changed. The searches this matches are “restore an old photo,” “remove scratches from a scanned picture,” and “colorize a black-and-white portrait.”

The file is resized in the browser and is not stored on this site. The repair is one image, about 1K. It is a visual cleanup, not a promise that every crease disappears or that a tiny face becomes a studio portrait.

How to restore a damaged photo

  1. Upload the scan

JPG, PNG, or WebP. A scan where the face is still visible gives the repair something to recover. The browser shrinks the long side so the request stays small.

  2. Decide on color

Leave “Add natural color” off to keep the original tones, including black and white. Turn it on when you want a careful color pass. Color does not replace the scratch removal.

  3. Generate and move the slider

The before image is the resized photo you sent. The after image is the repair. Drag the control. Look at eyes, hair, and background edges, not only the middle of the frame.

  4. Open the repaired file

If the repair is the one you want, open the original from the panel. If a face shifted, try again with color off, or with a tighter crop of the scan.

Repairs this page is for

A scratched black-and-white portrait

Upload the scan and leave color off. The job is scratch and dust removal without turning the photo into color. Compare hair and the collar with the slider.

A faded print that should gain color

Turn colorize on for a washed-out family print. The color should stay plausible, not saturated like a new poster. This is the “colorize an old photo” request.

A soft, slightly blurred face

A mildly soft portrait can gain clarity. A photo that is only a few pixels across will not become sharp. Crop closer before you upload if the face is a speck.

Tips for a repair that stays faithful

  • Compare with the slider before you trust the result. A cleaner photo can still be the wrong face.
  • Turn color off when you need the original tones preserved.
  • Crop out a torn border if you do not want the repair to invent what was outside the scan.
  • One clear subject restores more reliably than a crowd of tiny faces.
  • If you want a costume or a toy afterward, that is a different tool. Finish the repair first.

Photo restoration questions

What kinds of damage can it reduce?

Scratches, dust, stains, creases, fading, and mild blur. It keeps the same people and framing. It will not recover a face that was never in the scan.

How do I compare before and after?

A slider sits on the result. The left side of the divider is the photo you uploaded, after it was resized. The right side is the repair. Drag to inspect details.

Can I colorize a black-and-white photo?

Yes. Turn on “Add natural color.” Leave it off and black-and-white stays black and white. Color is restrained on purpose.

Will it change who is in the photo?

It is instructed not to. Still use the slider. If an eye, a jaw, or a hairline moved, do not treat that file as the restored original.

Is the scan stored?

No. The browser resizes it and it is sent only to make the repair. This site does not keep the upload.

Can I use the restored photo in another tool?

Save the repaired image, then upload it to the Halloween or action-figure page if you want a new picture from it. Those tools do not read this page’s result on their own.
